The country:
Brazil, the 5th largest country, is a “melting pot” of nations.
53% European (Portuguese, Italian, Spanish and German), 34% Mixed race
(Mestizo and Mulatto), 11% African, and 1% Asian. A nation of tremendous
natural resources and significance in the world economically and culturally.
However, the people of Brazil themselves are without question the most
valuable resource this nation holds. Brazil is rapidly becoming one of
the world's leading missionary sending nations.
The city:
Sao Vicente was the first city founded by the Portuguese in 1532. It shares
a land area known as Sao Vicente Island with the city of Santos, the largest
seaport in South America. The combined population is 1.2 million.
The church:
Tim pastors “Capela do Calvário de Sao Vicente”. The
church is growing; about 80 people currently attend regular Bible studies
through the NT on Sunday nights and the OT on Wednesday nights. They have
a Saturday night prayer meeting followed by men’s and women’s
discipleship and do outreaches in a favella called “Mexico 70”
on Wednesday and Sunday afternoons.
Short biography:
Tim and Talisa moved to Sao Vicente in July of 2000 following the first
Calvary Chapel of Corvallis outreach to Brazil in August, 1999. Hundreds
had responded to the gospel that summer and the need for discipleship
and a bible teaching church was very evident. They moved to Brazil with
their daughter Bethany, while Talisa was pregnant with their son Abraham.
The people of Brazil are hungry for God's Word and Tim reports great fruit
is resulting from the verse by verse teaching of God’s Word. “God
has been doing a radical work here in Brazil. For the last 15 years there
has been great growth in the evangelical churches and many people have
come to know Jesus. But they are remaining in an infant state because
of a lack of good doctrine and sound teaching. Just like everywhere in
the world, there is a famine for the Word of God. If this country becomes
established on the Word like England and the United States once were,
we could see this country used by God in a greater way than both those
countries combined.”
